![]() ![]() Some stories say that a massive earthen ramp was used to access the statue during construction. Each bronze plate had to be carefully cast then hammered into the right shape for its location in the figure, then hoisted into position and riveted to the surrounding plates and the iron frame. Iron beams were driven into the stone and connected with the bronze outer skin. The Colossus, which relied on weaker materials, must have weighed at least as much and probably more.Īncient accounts tell us that inside the statue were several stone columns which acted as the main support. The Statue of Liberty, roughly of the same size, weighs 225 tons. According to the book of Pilon of Byzantium, 15 tons of bronze were used and 9 tons of iron, though these numbers seem low to modern architects. The statue itself was constructed of bronze plates over an iron framework (very similar to the Statue of Liberty which is copper over a steel frame). In addition, such a pose would mean shutting down the harbor during the construction, something not economically feasible. ![]() No ancient account mentions the harbor-spanning pose and it seems unlikely the Greeks would have depicted one of their gods in such an awkward manner. Some think it was wearing a spiked crown, shading its eyes from the rising sun with its right hand, or possibly using that hand to hold a torch aloft in a pose similar to one later given to the Statue of Liberty. Historians believe the figure was nude or semi-nude with a cloak over its left arm or shoulder. Although the statue has sometimes been popularly depicted with its legs spanning the harbor entrance so that ships could pass beneath, it was actually posed in a more traditional Greek manner. Modern engineers have put forward a plausible hypothesis for the statue construction, based on the technology of those days (which was not based on the modern principles of earthquake engineering), and the accounts of Philo and Pliny who both saw and described the remains.]The statue was one hundred and ten feet high and stood upon a fifty-foot pedestal near the harbor entrance perhaps on a breakwater. However, according to Pliny, a historian who lived several centuries after the Colossus was built, construction took 12 years. Most likely the construction started in 292 BC This belief seems more true even, though it’s often said that work over it began in 304 BC. Construction was left to the direction of Chares, a native of Lindos in Rhodes, who had been involved with large-scale statues before. To celebrate their victory, the Rhodians sold the equipment left behind for 300 talents]and decided to use the money to build a colossal statue of their patron god, Helios. In 304 BC a relief force of ships sent by Ptolemy arrived, and Demetrius’s army abandoned the siege, leaving most of their siege equipment. Demetrius tried to build number of siege towers in order to get access to the walls. In 305 BC he had his son Demetrius Poliorcetes, also a general, invade Rhodes with an army of 40,000 however, the city was well-defended and it was nearly impossible to get through the walls, which was around the city. As a result Ptolemy took control of Egypt, Rhodes and Ptolemaic Egypt formed an alliance which controlled much of the trade in the eastern Mediterranean.Īntigonus I Monophthalmus was upset by this turn of events. After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, his heritage was left without a assigned governor as much as Alexander couldn’t call the name of future emperor. Fighting broke out among his generals, the Diadochi, with four of them eventually dividing much of his empire in the Mediterranean area. Thus, it was ruled by such well-known conqueror as Alexander the Great. Capturing this blossoming territory meant holding the reins of the economic at hand. It was often the reason of wars which lasted for centuries. and was designed to take advantage of the island’s best natural harbor on the northern coast. The capitol city, also named Rhodes, was built in 408 B.C. It is located off the southwestern tip of Asia Minor where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean. The storyline along the statue goes as following: The island of Rhodes was an important economic center in the ancient world. Before its destruction, the Colossus of Rhodes stood over 30 meters (107 ft) high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. It was constructed to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over the ruler of Cyprus, Antigonus I Monophthalmus, who unsuccessfully besieged Rhodes in 305 BC. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek Titan Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos between 292 and 280 BC. ![]()

![]() That makes it a little less painful when my daughter, accustomed to digital photography, fires off an entire roll of images in five minutes. ![]() While print quality in instant cameras is highly subjective-and none of them produce color-accurate prints-Fujifilm's Instax prints produce more pleasing results than the Cliq.Īt about 50 cents a print, Zink-based printing does have the price edge on Instax, which runs about 70 cents per print. Unfortunately, I'm not bowled over by the image quality from Zink-based cameras and printers. For this reason I favor the Cliq over something like HP's Sprocket printer, which produces similar images, but lacks the instant satisfaction of the Cliq. I would argue that the whole point of the Cliq is to print and share in the moment. I would not call this a deal breaker, but it's worth bearing in mind, especially if you're purchasing it for kids. There's one big gotcha to be aware of: You can't take pictures without printing. If you bought your phone in the last few years, it likely captures better images than the Cliq. Just know that the Cliq has a 5-megapixel camera so they're not the kind of photos you can blow up bigger than 2 x 3 inches. It does optionally store your images to a MicroSD card (64 GB max, like this one) so you can download and edit them using the desktop software of your choice. The Cliq holds 10 Zink papers and the refill packs are small enough that you can throw a few in your pocket and you won't even notice them. As a bonus, Zink images are also stickers. If you're looking for an easy way to share those selfies or group portraits in the real world, the Cliq delivers. Still, it's undeniably fun to use and the results will likely be good enough for many people. In keeping with the legacy of Polaroids, Canon's Cliq is not going to churn out museum-quality, crystal-clear prints. The Cliq uses a technology called Zink, which is shorthand for "zero ink." It produces more traditional prints, like what you'd get from a professional printer (but without the professional quality). Canon's new Ivy Cliq camera is one of them. Lately, there's a new crop of cameras boasting a different kind of tech, and they're aiming to out-print Instax. They're an evolution of the shake-'em-up, fade-in images of your youth. Instax prints are thinner and smaller, but they have the same white border Polaroids had because the border holds dye, which is released when the print is pushed out of the camera. For several years, Fujifilm's Instax cameras have been mining our 1980s Polaroid nostalgia using similar emulsion and dye sandwich prints. Polaroids also have that nostalgic appeal for those of us of a certain age, but the newer crop of instant cameras and printers use updated tech. "Can I take your portrait?" becomes a considerably less creepy question when you can hand over a copy of that portrait on the spot. ![]() They enthrall children and have even found an audience with pros. ![]() ![]() The only thing is that you have to understand these ideals and try to implement them in your life.īut, before we barge into that area, it is extremely important to understand what these ideals are. If you implement it, there should be no aspect of your life that should go untouched. ![]() We are trying to show you how Covey’s book, or rather, his model, was a complete model in itself. There are hidden implications in this book, yes, and a lot of people have just failed to see through them. They do not understand that Covey was trying to tell more than he wrote in words. If you ask them what the seven habits are, they can rattle them off end to end, but then they miss the larger picture. These are people who are impressed by the book already. The second problem is that a lot of people have a myopic view of Covey’s ideals. Or, they take the information and do not make the effort to actually utilize it so that it becomes knowledge for them. They do not realize that this book contains life-changing information. They consider his masterpiece of a book as a mere coffee-table book or a book that you use for light reading when you are traveling and then forget all about it. The first problem is that most people are too lazy to implement the ideals of Stephen Covey in their lives. There are two main problems here, and we are talking only about the people who have read the book already. Now, I am not saying that by using Covey’s model, or anyone else’s model for that matter, you can become a sure-shot success, but at least we should have seen many more successes around us already judging by the number of copies the book has sold! So, where is the shortcoming? This is definitely true because we still see so much failure all around us. This book was wonderful education for people, education in how to live life effectively and get closer to the ideal of being a ‘success’ in life.īut not everyone understands Stephen Covey’s model fully well, or maybe there are some people who haven’t read it yet. When Stephen Covey first released The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, the book became an instant rage because people suddenly got up and took notice that their lives were headed off in the wrong direction and more than that, they realized that there were so many simple things they could do in order to navigate their life correctly. Covey presents an approach to being effective in attaining goals by aligning oneself to what he calls “true north” principles based on a character ethic that he presents as universal and timeless. In my dragonfly photo I pushed the contrast up slightly which helps to get the subject separated from the background a bit more and adds a bit more crispness to the photo. The more contrast you apply the more defined the difference between lights and darks will get which can be observed in the stretching of the histogram. In the vast majority of my photographs I’ll end up increasing the contrast slightly as it tends to help bring out details and make the photo “pop” a bit more.Īs you watch the histogram you’ll notice that the data will either get stretched out or be pushed together depending on which way you go. Next up is the contrast slider, which will help to define the areas of lightness and darkness. In the photo below I added just a small bit to the exposure to brighten it up slightly. Watch your histogram and you’ll start to see the data shift from side to side as you make the changes. To lighten an underexposed photo simply slide the exposure slider to the right – if you’d like to reduce the brightness then slide it to the left. It is designed to adjust the mid-tones of the photo and therefore will help to add or reduce to the overall brightness of the scene. When I process photos I like to start with the exposure slider, as it’s a good overall adjustment to get started.
